Crawl, Climb, Swing, and Explore

Movement becomes even more exciting when children can explore it from a whole new perspective.

  • The Rope Tunnel transforms unused ceiling space into a dynamic, suspended play experience that encourages children to crawl, climb, balance, swing, and explore. With a flexible cargo-net exterior and a comfortable inner bedding net, it creates a unique space for active movement and imaginative play.
  • More than a climbing feature, the Rope Tunnel gives children opportunities to challenge their bodies, navigate changing positions, and build confidence through movement. It can become a secret hideaway, a reading nook, an obstacle-course element, or even a set of overhead monkey bars as children grow stronger.
  • Designed by educators for movement-rich play, the Rope Tunnel brings big physical play into playrooms, basements, and other high-ceiling spaces while making use of vertical space that might otherwise go unused.

Installation Guide

Installation Guide

Professional installation is strongly recommended.

The Rope Tunnel must be attached to properly installed structural blocking that is securely connected to the ceiling joists. Ceiling joists alone are not considered sufficient structural support.

Recommended blocking options include:

  • 2" × 6" lumber
  • 3/4" highly rated plywood

Plywood blocking is preferred because it provides greater flexibility when determining the Rope Tunnel's placement.

The installation guide recommends approximately 3'–3'6" between mounting points and states that mounting points should never exceed 3'11" apart.

Compatible structural attachment surfaces include:

  • Wood studs
  • Metal studs
  • Concrete
  • CMU

Brick and rock veneer are not acceptable attachment structures.

Mounting screws appropriate for the home's structural material are not included and must be selected based on the installation conditions.

Safety + Use Requirements

The Rope Tunnel is designed for recreational indoor climbing, but climbing inherently involves risk.

For safe use:

  • One user at a time
  • Maximum user weight: 250 lbs per the installation manual
  • Adult supervision is required for children under 6
  • Do not jump from the Rope Tunnel
  • Do not attach additional items to the Rope Tunnel
  • Do not use the Rope Tunnel as an anchor
  • Keep the climbing area clear of furniture and other obstructions
  • Always use an appropriate fall-attenuation surface
  • Inspect mounting hardware and the equipment periodically for wear and stability

Give Them Room to Move

The installation guide recommends a minimum 6-foot perimeter around active play features for falling or dismounting clearance.

For rooms with ceilings under 10 feet, the guide specifically recommends crash mats as an appropriate fall-attenuation option.

Always consider the Rope Tunnel's entrance and exit when planning your installation. The tunnel should provide a clear way for children to enter and exit, whether connected to a climbing wall, fort, or another appropriate access point.

Care + Maintenance

Rope Tunnels are designed to be very low maintenance.

  • Wipe the rope with a damp cloth as needed
  • Periodically inspect all mounting hardware
  • Check the tunnel for signs of damage or wea
  • Confirm the installation remains secure before use

Beyond the Climb

At Groh, we believe children learn through movement. The Rope Tunnel creates a constantly changing movement experience.

Crawling through the tunnel requires children to coordinate their arms, legs, and core while navigating an enclosed and flexible environment.
The Rope Tunnel also creates a novel space for quieter play. Once inside, children may turn it into a cozy place to read, draw, imagine, or simply take a break from the activity around them.
